The iPhone 6 has been with me since it was released 10 days ago and as I’ve already covered in my hands on, the 4.7 inch screen size is perfect for one handed usability. However, Apple released two iPhones this year and the iPhone 6 is the smaller of the two with a 4.7 inch display. The iPhone 6 Plus comes with a 5.5 inch display along with a few other beefed up specs over it’s little brother and a couple of days ago, the iPhone 6 Plus landed at our doorstep. Let’s take a look -

So we’ll begin with the obvious point – yes the iPhone 6 Plus is BIG. Like seriously big. It measures almost the same as the Huawei Ascend Mate 7, which has an extra 0.5 inch larger display and despite the curved corners, there’s no denying that if you’re going from a 4 inch iPhone to the 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus, you’ll have a lot of adjusting to do. That being said, the iPhone 6 Plus’ saving grace is that it is really slim and the weight is well proportioned. The Full HD display looks pretty impressive but the fact that Apple have made the handset wider means they have lost their unique selling point as it’s no longer easily usable in one hand.

Just like other companies, Apple have been forced to keep up with modern requirements and like all companies have discovered, smartphone users want large phablet sized displays. The iPhone 6 Plus does raise a question though – is iOS really suitable for the big screen market? The 4.7 inch display on the iPhone 6 allows Apple to keep the same layout style of icons on the homescreen whilst remaining comfortable for the end user but the iPhone 6 just takes that and makes it bigger. It’s certainly worked for Apple in the iPad stakes but the phablet category is hotly contested and it’s very likely that the supremely impressive Galaxy Note 4 could prove to be a real challenger to the iPhone 6 Plus when it launches next month.

Reachability on the iPhone 6 Plus

Overall, the iPhone 6 Plus is BIG, there’s just no denying it. However the iOS 8 Reachability feature means you can still use it in one hand (although it’s not overly comfortable to do so) and the hardware is simply fantastic. In the first two days of use, we’re noticing that the battery life is seriously impressive – after all, it’s nearly 40% larger than the iPhone 6 and Apple’s optimisations means the battery life is likely to be a key selling point for the iPhone 6 Plus.
