Smartphone cameras – whether we’re a fan of them or not (and I personally am), there’s no denying that smartphone cameras are one of the most important features to consider when you’re looking for a new phone. It’s not all about megapixels as a handset with a lower megapixel count may have other factors and technologies that allow it to produce better pictures than its rivals. With this in mind, we took three flagship Android smartphones up to Maidenhead for the day to just which had the better camera.

Conclusion
Despite differences between the three camera sensors, both in terms of megapixels and pixel size, the overall images produced are very good from each of the three devices. Overall images appear brighter from the Galaxy S5 than its rival devices whilst the amount of detail captured is impressive on both the Xperia Z2 and the Galaxy S5.
The HTC One M8 fares very well in this test but that is partially due to the optimum light conditions and partially due to the larger 2µm pixel size (in comparison, the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 both have 1.1µm pixel size – the larger the pixels, the more light allowed into the sensor). The 4MP sensor on the M8 leaves a lot to be desired though – whilst the images captured on the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 could both be cropped to focus on a particular aspect of the scene, the 4MP sensor included in the M8’s Ultrapixel camera means there’s very little to work with.
Looking at all twelve galleries, we’d have to say the winner is the Galaxy S5 followed closely by the Xperia Z2 and the HTC One M8. This could be due to the software algorithms used as well as the 16MP sensor with Rapid Autofocus. Whilst the daylight conditions helped the overall images in this gallery, it will be interesting to see how they fare in lower light conditions and we’ll bring you this comparison shortly so stay tuned!
